SOLA WHITE SPACE

‘White Space’ is the wide-ranging new release from South London’s Sola. Lyrically, she makes the leap to Nigeria, looking at the role of women in Nollywood films: “The female protagonists are often quite psycho and go through extreme lengths to punish their unfaithful lovers.” While she doesn’t reach the same extremes, Sola is happy to “embrace the chaotic energy”. Her vocal style takes from the likes of Nina Simone, but her production style is a cinematic blend of modern R&B and borderline experimental soul. Miles Davis’ right-hand-man Bill Evans even gets a look-in, with his unique style inspiring the memorable piano melody. Check out Sola’s debut EP, Wealth Has Come as soon as you can. -Dan Peeke
